I make canes from sapling trees that I uproot now and then, from thicket growing on hillsides on our acreage. Most of them will eventually die anyway, crowded out by the competition. The handle of each cane is fashioned out of the root of the tree that was just below the surface of the ground. I grind, rasp, plane, and otherwise shape each one till it fits in one or both of my hands. Sometimes they have antlers, sometimes noses, sometimes two heads. It depends on what was going on underground. Each cane needs to be fitted to its user, and will be cut to length and provided a rubber tip before it leaves my shop.
